Job Posting - Head Coach

The Men’s and Women’s rowing clubs at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are looking for a full-time Head Coach who can start for the 2019-2020 season. Illinois Rowing has continuously grown since its founding in 2005 and is set up as a coach-led, student-run club program that is overseen and supported by an alumni advisory board. We compete in the Great Lakes Region of the American Collegiate Rowing Association and have won multiple medals over the last few years.

Required Qualifications:

  • Rowing experience
  • Effective communicator with strong leadership, mentoring, and organizational skills
  • Experience with rigging and simple equipment maintenance
  • Willing to drive shell trailer to races
  • Ability to drive motorized launch during practices
  • Commitment to athlete development
  • Ability to lift/carry 50lbs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Collegiate rowing/coaching experience
  • Professional or academic background in physical therapy or strength and conditioning
  • Demonstrated coaching success
  • Trailer driving experience
  • Ability to perform occasional minor boat repairs, more complex composite repair skills are a bonus
  • Proven fundraising experience

Candidates must also have or be able to obtain:

  • Valid US Driver’s License
  • Current First Aid/CPR Certification
  • US Rowing Level II Certification
  • Illinois Boating License
  • SafeSport Certification

Responsibilities:

  • Recruiting new high-caliber athletes on campus
  • Conducting on-water and indoor practices Monday-Saturday during the school year
  • Attendance at all regattas
  • Accompanying team during spring break training trip
  • Development and implementation of a high-level training program
  • Driving team truck and trailer to regattas and as needed
  • Managing and leading assistant coaching staff
  • Coordination of equipment purchases and management with alumni advisory board
  • Assisting with team and alumni capital improvement fundraising efforts
  • Advising student executive council in management of fiscal affairs and day-to-day operations
  • Working with the alumni board to support state, county, and university groups in the establishment of local community and adaptive programs
  • Routine maintenance of practice site and equipment
  • Installation and removal of lane-lines at home venue
  • Coordinating and hosting home races/scrimmages
  • Maintaining high standards of safety on and off the water

Compensation:

  • Total base compensation $20,000-25,000 based on experience.
  • Generous performance bonuses ($2,500-7,500) based on recruitment and retention.

This position comes with options for full benefits, employed through the Illinois Rowing Association (ILRA) with an initial 1-year contract. Additional income opportunities are also available with established and upcoming programs. Position to start August 1st, 2019.
