Illini Sweep Gold at St. Louis Indoor

The Fighting Illini took home 4 Gold Medals at the St. Louis Indoor Rowing Championships at Washington University in St. Louis on February 2nd, 2013. For this competition, Illinois sent 12 of its top athletes to compete. Senior Danielle Saubert improved on her record breaking time from last year in the Women's Collegiate Varsity race by 15.2 seconds to set a new record of 7:07.1 for the 2000m race. Sophomore Tessa Copple continued the winning streak by winning the Women's Collegiate Novice race with a time of 7:59.9 marking the first time an Illini athlete has won gold in that event.On the men's side, Nick Van Antwerp beat out teammate Ben Wilson by 0.1 seconds to claim first place in the Men's Collegiate Varsity race. The Men's Collegiate Novice race was no less exciting with Jack Fuller claiming first place to complete the sweep; a mere two seconds ahead of teammate Andrew Holm who claimed third in the event.The Illini Lightweights managed to score personal records on route to podium finishes. Freshman Olivia Altmayer clocked in a time of 8:14.9 to finish third in the Women's Collegiate Lightweight race despite being a novice rower. Sophomore Ronald Tyson rowed a 6:58.8 to secure second place in the Men's Collegiate Lightweight race.For a full set of results, please visit the regatta page.
